Data Sources

Our fence estimates use 2024-2025 pricing data from contractor bid databases, Home Depot and Lowe's retail pricing, and regional labor rate surveys from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

How Material Costs Work

  • Posts are spaced every 6-8 feet (we use 8 ft for standard, 6 ft for heavy materials like wrought iron). Post cost varies by type: wood ($15-25), metal ($25-40), concrete-set ($35-55).
  • Rails are priced per linear foot. Most fences use 2 horizontal rails; 8 ft fences use 3.
  • Pickets/Panels are the most expensive material component. We calculate by linear foot adjusted for height and material grade.
  • Concrete and hardware include post-hole concrete (2 bags per post), screws/nails, brackets, and caps.

Labor Costs

  • Professional labor runs $5-$15 per linear foot depending on material difficulty.
  • Chain link is fastest to install; wrought iron and composite require skilled fabrication.
  • DIY mode removes labor costs but we still include post-hole concrete and hardware.

Height Multiplier

Taller fences cost more per linear foot due to more material and deeper post holes. We apply: 4 ft (0.75x), 5 ft (0.88x), 6 ft (1.0x baseline), 8 ft (1.4x).

Terrain Adjustment

Sloped terrain requires racking or stepping panels. Slight slope adds 10-15%; steep/stepped terrain adds 20-30% for additional labor and custom cuts.

Gates

Walk gates (3-4 ft) run $150-$600 depending on material. Double drive gates (10-12 ft) run $400-$1,500+. Gate costs include posts, hardware, and latches.

Permits

Most municipalities require a fence permit. Costs range from $100 in rural areas to $1,000+ in dense urban zones. We include survey/setback compliance in permit costs.
