Data Sources

Our flooring estimates are based on 2024-2025 national pricing data from major retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's, Floor & Decor), contractor bid databases, and RSMeans construction cost data.

Material Costs

  • Material prices reflect installed cost per square foot for each flooring type at the selected quality tier.
  • Budget tier uses the 25th percentile of market pricing; Mid-range uses median; Premium uses 75th-90th percentile.

Waste Factor

We add a 10% waste factor for standard rectangular rooms. Complex layouts, diagonal installations, or patterned tile may require 12-15%. Our calculator uses 10% as a conservative baseline.

Labor Costs

  • Labor is calculated separately from materials and varies by flooring type due to difficulty and time required.
  • Tile and stone typically cost the most to install; carpet and vinyl the least.
  • DIY mode removes labor costs but we recommend professional installation for hardwood, tile, and stone.

Additional Costs

  • Subfloor prep: Minor leveling ($1-3/sqft) or major prep ($3-6/sqft) for uneven or damaged subfloors.
  • Removal: Existing floor removal costs vary by material — tile removal is most expensive due to labor intensity.
  • Stairs: Each step is priced individually as they require custom cutting and more labor.
  • Transitions: T-moldings and transition strips at doorways run $15-40 each installed.
